Selling and Serving - Projects Galore funded by Heritage Lottery Fund

Investigation of retailing and wholesale supply in Newcastle's West End 1880-1980. Newcastle histories typically focus on shipbuilding and heavy engineering, therefore privileging men's histories.  This project explored the often overlooked contributions of women and asian people to the history of the West End of Newcastle.

  • 50 workshops for local people, including specialist training from Tyne and Wear Museums and Archives on how to record oral histories for the local archive.

  • Exhibitions in Fenham Library, St James' Heritage Centre and the Discovery Museum

  • Oral histories shop owners and shop workers, in particular women and Asian people, lodged with Tyne and Wear Archives
